Kuaishou Expands Through Global Licensing Deal with Warner Chappell Music

Kuaishou grows its user base outside of China through license deals and data security

Kuaishou has fortified its music library through a new licensing deal with Warner Chappell Music. The deal continues the trend of Chinese platforms looking to diversify their content as their global user bases expand. The company recently reached over 180 million monthly active users outside of China. In Latin America and the Middle East, and North Africa regions under the name KWAI, the platform has become one of the most popular apps. The same goes for South East Asia under the name SnackVideo.

Warner Chappell Music brings one of the largest music catalogs in the world to the deal. WCM offers a wide array of songwriters spanning all genres, with material ranging from top-charting contemporary hits to current pop. With over 70,000 songwriters, WCM ‘s robust music collection will help TikTok competitor Kauishou provide new content for the platform’s user base.

Warner Chappell Music Senior Vice President of Global Digital, Natalie Madaj, said: “As the digital ecosystem continues to evolve in exciting new ways, social-sharing apps like Kuaishou are changing how people experience and discover music around the world. We’re very proud to be partnering with the team to bring our catalog of songs to Kuaishou’s engaged user base and talented music creators.”

One of the Catalysts of Kauishou’s growth outside of China has been its ongoing commitment to data security – an issue that its competitor Tik Tok has struggled with in almost all of its global regions. The short-form video-sharing platform officially received international certification in August 2022. The ISO/IEC 27701 and ISO/IEC 27001 certification is an independent third-party audited process that rigorously checks that the platform’s global security and risk operations meet the highest standard.

The ISO/IEC 27701 and ISO/IEC 27001 requires that management systematically examines the organization’s information security risks, taking account of the threats, vulnerabilities, and impacts. It certifies that KWAI has adopted an overarching management process to ensure its security controls continue to meet its needs on an ongoing basis. The ISO/IEC certifications are recognized in Kuaishou’s largest growth regions, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast and South Asia.

Calvin Liu, Head of Kuaishou Compliance, Communication Experience and Partnership says: “This certification reflects Kuaishou’s social responsibility and commitment to user information security, marking that Kuaishou has reached the international advanced level. The certification reflected on Kwai’s controls, global security, and risk operations meeting the highest standards and its advanced protection protocols, its development, infrastructure, operations, and services to users worldwide.”
